Multiple first-line therapies as part of the response to antimalarial drug resistance
Artemisinin-based combination therapy has been a key component of malaria treatments in the last few decades. The emerging partial resistance of malaria parasites to artemisinin is now threatening malaria control. In response to these changes, the World Health Organisation (WHO) published an implementation guide that supports malaria programmes in responding to antimalarial drug resistance.
Prof Karen Barnes (University of Cape Town), MARC SE-Africa coordinator, is one of the contributors to the conclusions that underpin the implementation guidance.
