Regional action needed to halt antimalarial drug resistance in Africa

Malaria control and elimination measures are being undermined by the rapid spread of artemisinin partial resistance across east Africa, the Horn of Africa, and southern Africa. Artemisinin-based combination therapies are the cornerstone of treatment, but these developments threaten the progress made in malaria control in the past decades.

The authors (including MARC SE-Africa partners Karen Barnes and Arjen Dondorp) call for urgent action to address antimalarial drug resistance through targeted treatment, chemoprevention, and transmission control.
